Background:Folding@Home is a distributive computer project run by Stanford University focusing on modeling the behavior of proteins. The program tests simulations of proteins in environments ranging from the brains of folks with Parkinson’s Disease to inside carbon nanotubes.
Futures in Biotech did a show on F@H where you can get more information.
Distributive Computing: By breaking big complex math problems into many little ones that can be run simultaneously, the processing can be broken up such that calculations can be done simultaneously by multiple processors allowing a network to perform calculations at speeds that exceed modern supercomputers.
How It Works (and how you can get shit): Folding@Home downloads a little file containing instructions that are run on your processor with extra processor cycles. Additionally, for bragging rights, teams can be formed to pool work units. Suburban Adventure’s team number is 65656 and so far it’s just a collection of my computers, well, you can add to that.
- Download Folding@Home
- Join team 65656
- Produce at least 1 work unit to officially join the team.
- Try to get others to join.
- Crank out as many Work Units as you can.
